One Piece: Is Edward Weevil Whitebeard’s real son?

Edward Weevil

One of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, Edward Weevil, was one of the most surprising and powerful new characters in One Piece after the time jump. He seemed to come out of nowhere with a naginata and a white mustache in the shape of a crescent moon, just like the former Strongest Man in the World, Edward Newgate, aka Whitebeard. Weevil and his mother, Buckingham Stussy, were sailing the seas in search of Whitebeard’s fortune. Weevil thinks, primarily because of his mother’s influence, that he is Whitebeard’s trueborn son, and worth is his birthright.

In the latest chapter of One Piece, 1073, Weevil was captured by the Marines after protecting Whitebeard’s home island, Sphinx, and Admiral Ryokugyu beat him. But when it was revealed that CP0 Agent Stussy was a clone made by Vegapunk of the former Rocks Pirate, who turned out to be Buckingham Stussy, the chance that Weevil was Whitebeard’s real son went up. Weevil, a complete jerk of a character and a pirate, being the trueborn son of one of the greatest pirates, used to be a funny joke, but recent events in the story have shifted the odds in favor of Buckingham’s claims being valid.

Weevil’s weapons and mustache were never soundproof of his claim. Anyone could pick up a naginata and start swinging it around, and the mustache looked even more fake than Whitebeard. Aside from how strong he was, there wasn’t much to go on when trying to figure out if Weevil was telling the truth all those years ago. Yet, One Piece shows that Buckingham Stussy was a member of the Rocks Pirates. She seemed lovely, so it’s not hard to think that Whitebeard might have found her attractive when he was younger and more daring. Romance is not a big part of One Piece, but all of the characters in the world had to come from somewhere.

Whitebeard

Recent One Piece chapters have given us new information that suggests a different way of thinking about Weevil’s existence. Weevil’s face, toothpick legs, strong body, and dim-witted personality make it clear that he is nothing like Whitebeard. He may have turned out this way because of how Stussy raised him. She may have been too protective of him. There is another possible answer: Weevil is a copy or copycat of Whitebeard, but he doesn’t work. Weevil is like Frankenstein in that he is a mindless monster that does whatever the person in charge tells him to do. Weevil’s “mother’s” clone, CP0 Stussy, was a good copy of the former Rocks Pirate, but Weevil could be a bad copy because he was made in a much less efficient way.

This storyline would fit with the way One Piece is going right now. It’s not a coincidence that cloning and the Rocks Pirates are being talked about now, along with a side plot involving Marco, Buckingham, and Weevil. One Piece’s storylines and themes tend to come full circle, so the idea that the World Government made Weevil look like Whitebeard would fit with the story. If he’s not Whitebeard’s son, it will make more sense for Weevil to be related to him in some way than for him to just be a powerful pirate who thinks he’s Whitebeard’s son. That, or his legs, would suggest he is Kaido’s son and Yamato’s brother.

Eiichiro Oda is good at surprising people and changing plans. By making it look like the chances of Weevil being Whitebeard’s son are so low and then making it seem like it’s a real possibility, it could lead to a double bluff. Since the story shows so much, it may not be long before fans find out the truth about Weevil’s background. Either way, it’s likely he is connected to Whitebeard in some way, even if it’s not the way fans expect.
