Even though Toji Fushiguro died before the story started, he is still one of the most popular and vital characters in Jujutsu Kaisen. Just saying that Maki had reached the same level of power as he was enough to get the Zenin clan to fight against her, which they lost.
In the end, Toji loses to Gojo Satoru in a fight. It wasn’t because Gojo Satoru was much stronger than Toji but because Toji lost his most significant advantage at the worst time. Maki recently got the same power-up, so his training shows how their unique ability works and why it didn’t help Toji when he needed it most.
The only thing Maki Zenin got from Toji Fushiguro was his strength, not his technique.
After the death of her twin sister, Maki’s Heavenly Restriction was finally finished, and regular jujutsu sorcerers were no match for her. Maki didn’t realize she still didn’t have everything she needed until she met Naoya Zenin again, this time as a cursed spirit. When Maki saw how easily Hagane Daido, a reincarnated Culling Game player, beat Naoya in Jujutsu Kaisen 195, she realized that she was still missing something that Toji and other master fighters had. Another reincarnated player, Rokujushi Miyo, would help her work on her weaknesses if she agreed to practice sumo with him.
Rokujushi helped Maki train to get a better sense of her surroundings and opponents, which would let her notice even the most minor changes. He said that Maki hadn’t been able to use this technique before because her inner turmoil made her focus only on her opponent in battle and ignore everything else that could be going on.
Rokujushi called this technique “a sense of freedom,” He was living proof that people who could separate themselves from even the results of their battles would gain an uncanny sense of their surroundings. He said this ability was an abstract idea that went far beyond normal senses, like being able to smell light and see sound. Toji had learned to use this sense during his life, and when Maki did the same, she was indeed on the same level as her uncle.
Jujutsu Kaisen 75: Toji Fushiguro vs Gojo Satoru
A cursed spirit was wrapped around Toji Fushiguro’s body as he looked down to the left. His right side and arm are both gone.
During the “Hidden Inventory” arc of Jujutsu Kaisen, when Toji first faces Gojo, it’s easy to see that he’s following this principle of detachment. Even though Geto Suguru and Gojo are said to be their generation’s strongest sorcerers, Toji can easily keep up with them, simultaneously dodging attacks from both of them. Geto takes Riko Amanai away to keep her safe, and the battle starts in earnest. Gojo starts throwing all his cursed moves at his attacker, but they only put off the inevitable. Before the young sorcerer even knew what was going on, Toji stabbed him with a cursed tool, killing him and leaving him for dead.
In his rush to finish his original mission, which was to kill Amanai, Toji forgot to kill Gojo. This mistake was his downfall because the wound almost killed him was just what Gojo needed to figure out the secret to the Reversed Cursed Technique. This advanced jujutsu technique usually showed a sorcerer’s unmatched control over cursed energy. Gojo fixed all his wounds and went straight to Toji’s place for a rematch. Again, Toji could easily block or avoid Gojo’s attacks, but this time, Toji couldn’t get rid of an uneasy feeling as they fought.
Toji had been hired to kill Amanai, who would be a Star Plasma Vessel, so his fight with Gojo before wasn’t about a personal grudge. It was all about the money, and that’s how he kept himself from getting involved in the fight and kept his senses sharp. During the second fight, however, the situation changed. Both characters were fighting to prove who was better, and while Gojo’s Six Eyes gave him complete awareness, Toji’s sensory abilities stopped working as soon as his ego got in the way. Gojo used Hollow Purple right away and tore a hole right through the side of his opponent.
Before he died, Toji quietly admitted that he had been too proud. Before he fought Gojo a second time, he had never been the type to do things like to fight a sorcerer just for fun. This sudden personality change happened because Gojo’s rise in power opened up an old wound. Even though Toji was strong, he was looked down upon in the Zenin clan because he didn’t have cursed energy. Gojo Satoru, who was at the top of the jujutsu world at the time, was standing in front of him. Getting rid of him would have been the best way for Toji to prove himself, but it was not meant to be.
